What makes a merry baby?
Obviously love and attention are the most important elements, and every baby is unique, but there are many things that I feel contribute to having a happy, healthy child. Here is my shortlist:

• A healthy mother - before, during and after pregnancy. Physically and emotionally.
• A non-medicated birth - this gives the baby the best entry into the world and helps allow the strongest maternal/infant bonding.
• Breastfeeding on demand - the best option for both mom and baby for health reasons alone, breastfeeding is also incredibly pleasurable for both, though it may take several weeks to get it right.
• Co-sleeping - the most pleasurable, convenient and stress-free sleeping arrangement for most parents who try it, and babies love it.
• Going diaper-free - Americans are conditioned to think babies need diapers, but babies know better (as do most families in the greater world). No sitting in dirty diapers, no diaper rash, and a great way to communicate from day one.
• Babywearing - Babies relax and are comforted by being carried close to you. Slings are great.
• Plenty of playtime - Babies love to play, and laugh and explore. They love movement - walking, bouncing, swinging, baby yoga. They love songs, and stories, and watching people, especially other children.
• Responsive parents - Letting a baby cry teaches them that they are alone and unimportant. Responding quickly teaches them that they can communicate and are loved, and makes for a more independant, confident child and adult.
